Is this blog too local??
By: Lugo | January 27th, 2008Due to the lack of comments and feedback I’ve been getting I am beginning to wonder if a blog on a specific Colombian team in English was indeed a good idea or if it would have been better to write about Colombian soccer in general which could be more appealing to the worldwide audience of The Offside. I also wanted to start this blog along with a proposal which i’ve submitted to Junior’s management but have not received any kind of answer so far. I know we’re in Carnival and the team is coming back from Venezuela so I will wait for a couple of weeks or so before making a decision but if the Junior management does not grant me the insider access I am requesting it, then it would be impossible for me to maintain a blog specifically about them
But before asking Martha for the whole haulover, i want to ask YOU, fellow visitor, if you want this Junior blog to continue with several projects (Team history, match previews and analyses, etc…) or revamp this into a Colombian blog with news about all the 18 (or even 36 if the Copa Colombia goes trough) teams in Colombian football and the National Team. Nowadays, Colombian players are going to all kinds of places in the footballing world and this could be a very useful source of information for soccer aficionados all over the world. So the ball is in your court. Let me know what you do with it.

Hi, Lugo. I know nothing about Colombian futbol, but I do know about writing blogs when it seems like nobody reads them, so that’s what I’ll talk about.
I wrote the page on the France NT over on World Cup Blog for ages before I developed regular readers. I kept writing because I loved the team and enjoyed writing about them. Eventually people would google something about the team or the players, and they would find my blog. And some of them started coming back regularly and leaving comments, which made it easier to keep blogging. Which made it easier to attract new readers.
In November, the last month I have numbers for, that page got something like 15,000 pageviews. (That was a key Euro qualifier month, so that’s probably skewed high.) But it’s taken well over a year to get there.
I have no idea how many English-speaking Junior fans there are out there, or how long it will take for them to find the blog. All I can say is, if you’re enjoying what you’re doing enough to keep it up, eventually they will find you.
(One tip: Post regular pictures labeled with the players’ names. That seems to be what a lot of people are searching for when they originally come to my blog.)

I gotta echo Laurie. When I first started writing on this site, I had very few readers. I took until last summer before I had a developed a core group of readers.
It might seem like you’re the only person who cares about your team, but there are definitely more out there. Like Laurie said, post pictures! The prettier a post is, the more likely you are to get a response out of your readers. Also, the more you post, the more it helps. So it give it time.

I’m unfamiliar with Colombian league football, with the exception of a few players.
Maybe, if you start anew with the blog, try to have an ‘introduction to Colombian football’- a run down of the top teams in the country, local rivalries (how they came to be), top prospects, & whatnot. You could elaborate on the details you think we’d find most interesting.
You can also include the Colombian league table at the end of each round, too.
chau.

I feel that you and I are somewhat in the same boat - English speaking latinos (I assume you are) trying to cover a South American club to an audience that may not have much familiarity with it. I too wish I could have some more comments, but every once in a while I get some good feedback. I hope you stick around.

I admittedly don’t know much about Colombian football, a little about the history but not recent developments. Introductions to your team and the league as a whole would be welcome, either way I hope to see you continue and fully support any effort to extend The Offside globally.

Christian, I’m guilty of not posting more comments despite being a frequent reader of your River blog.

Hey Lugo, I’m not necessarily a Juniors fan, but I am a fan of Columbian football in general and appreciate your having a blog. Did you see the Cali-America game today? (Saturday 8 March) What was going on in the stands?!
